DAPCOM Data Services is a spin-off company participated by the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). We provide software engineering solutions and data compression strategies, including our own implementations, for both general and specific cases and sectors. We are specialized on the handling and processing of large amounts of data. This company is the result of the research carried out by a group composed of eight researchers from the UB, the UPC and the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC), who began to work together on the Gaia project, a space astrometry mission of the European Space Agency (ESA).

DAPCOM commercializes FAPEC (Fully Adaptive Prediction Error Coder), a patented lossless data compression algorithm originally created for space communications. FAPEC offers an optimum compromise between CPU resource consumption and compression ratio, offering good performance even with noise and outliers present in the data to be compressed. FAPEC can have multiple applications in processing and transport of large data sets, such as in scientific research, supercomputers or in companies dealing with Big Data scenarios such as in the ICT, multimedia, social networks or online gaming sectors.

Due to its high potential, the UB and the UPC have supported the creation of the company and have applied the patent of the technology in Europe and in the United States. In addition, the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG) has given advice on the definition of the business strategy. The project has also received the support of the Ministry of Education, by means of the campus of International excellence BKC and RedEmprendia.
